Coming clean with Botanics

Plants are powerful. Now that I’ve tackled my hair woes, (see previous post) I’ve moved on to concour my temperamental skin with the help of Botanics. Since I have combination skin, I’m always fighting breakouts along my chin and T-zone. Over the years, (even with sunscreen every day) I’ve dealt with sensitivity and blotchiness that is hard to tame. With that being said, I’ve gone through many a dermatologist and many skin care products in my day, but nothing has been nearly as effective, gentle, and affordable as this line. Now at Target, they’re all under $10 and I’m happy to have found something that works that’s affordable.

I’ve been using Botanics now for 2 weeks, and I’m already seeing clearer, calmer skin. Hyper pigmentation has reduced significantly to where my face is one tone with very little redness. I’m even using just a bb cream, no foundation or cover up necessary anymore. So here’s what I do:

  1. Wash morning and night with the Shine Away Mattifying Mousse. Willowbark is naturally high in salicylic acid so it removes oil and clarifies skin
  2. Pat on the Shine Away Toner (or with cotton pad) to remove impurities and tighten pores
  3. Apply the Shine Away Day Cream with SPF 15 all over face. You don’t need much, it’s light weight and gentle and my skin is completely hydrated and not greasy.

  • Twice a week (at night) I use the Shine Away Clay Mask to draw out all the gunk and impurities my skin may absorb. Leave on for about 10 minutes and your skin will feel extra clean before washing with cleanser.
  • Twice a week (at night) I use the Invigorating Face Scrub that gently sloughs off dead skin. (Don’t rub too hard, I usually do this on the days I don’t use the mask.)
  • 3-4 times a week (at night) I apply the Shine Away Gel Cream prior to moisturizing which acts to clarify and seal in all the work I just did. My skin actually feels tighter each time I use it!

Getting Personal #FunctionofBeauty

Let’s get personal shall we? Having gone through a lot shampoo bottles and brands over the years (mainly all from drugstores and the occasional splurge at Sephora) I think I’ve finally found something that actually works for my hair type, which is a little troublesome: Oily, sometimes itchy and flaky, thick, and colored. Why hasn’t Head and Shoulders, Pantene, or OGX done the trick? It’s because they’re not custom. They may try to treat one of the problems, but not all. Or they’re filled with junk and chemicals that aren’t good for you nor the water system.

Enter Function of Beauty. Fill out a fun and easy hair survey based on your needs via their website, pick a delicious scent (I chose Passion Fruit Hibiscus) and their chemists will mix a concoction up for you and pop it in the mail. What’s more is that I can’t stand all the junk such as Parabens and Phthalates, and Function of Beauty is free of all that. No GMO’s allowed.

Free shipping and $26 later, I shortly received 2 bottles of my new custom hair care with my name on the bottles. They’re just for me, myself, and my type of hair :D

I’ve been using my new shampoo and conditioner for about 3 weeks now and my hair seems softer, shinier (not to be mistaken for oily), and my scalp seems calmer and less irritated. Plus, every time I wash my color treated hair, I smell like passion fruit which I love.

Let me know if you decide to mix your own via Function of Beauty because I definitely want to hear your thoughts. You can save $5 when you click the link. Until then, wishing you all happy hair days from here on out :D

Coffee o’clock

Monday mornings call for an extra dose of coffee. Provender is one of my favorite coffee shops in Potrero Hill, serving Andytown roasters and a mean avocado toast. It seats about 3 inside this little space and a little bench outside that’s next to the quaintest flower shop, Bell and Trunk Flowers. For a tiny tiny space, it’s perfectly designed and hidden from all the hustle and bustle.

What gets me through the morning? A strong latte, my sunglasses/bag of choice, and my Nicole Vienna Mesh piece that keeps me on time and my wrist oh so shiny. Someone even complimented my watch inside Provender, the people love this watch as do I :D

Hope you enjoy this little set. What morning essentials can’t you live without?

Band of Flowers

Getting ready for Summer with an off the shoulder blouse from The Mint Julep Boutique. Flowers are everywhere, in our yard or at Mille Fiori, my favorite local flower stand on Piedmont Ave (where we shot this blouse.) The Bay Area may be rather windy at the moment, but I’m ready for pit fruits, family bbq’s, and some warmer weather. What are your summer plans?

Aloha! Hawaii Part I

Aloha everyone :D I’m back from Hawaii now and am already missing the views and crystal blue waters. @Twelfthknight and I were on the island of Oahu to attend the wedding of his friends Jerry and Gloria Wu. It was a lovely ceremony at the Hale Koa Resort on Waikiki, which is also where we stayed. It’s been years since I’ve been back to Hawaii, and this trip would be @Twelfthknight‘s and I’s first time traveling together. We had such a quiet relaxing time from start to finish even with the abnormally punishing humidity. We’re not much for the crazy-fast paced-pack everything in-types, we like to eat and take our time, relax, and just be present, not just on vacation but also in general. Now that we’re back, I can honestly say that we needed more time away, so hopefully we can island hop on our next trip out there.

For those of you following along on Instagram, you may have seen a few of these photos already. But I must thank you all because when I was in Hawaii I hit over 1,000 followers, yay! Enjoy the first part of our Hawaii trip, Part II will be posted next week :D
