That’s a Wrap on 2015

Last post of the year and I could very easily just talk about what I’m wearing here or how this could be a versatile NYE look…but I would prefer to recap what a ride 2015 has been and get a little deeper.

I wish you all a wonderful New Year and a huge thank you for being such a supportive community.

IMG_1148

I have genuinely grown homesick for Los Angeles, a feeling I’ll never have for SF proper, however I do like the Bay Area and the things that are brewing here on this side of the East Bay. It is where I was born and raised after all.

So when I shut my door in Sherman Oaks and took my last stroll through Sawtelle Blvd and sipped my last Urth latte in Downtown for a while, it was a bittersweet closing; not just on the year but because I knew things were changing yet once again.

IMG_0905IMG_0913

I quickly had to hone a new set of skills, all while maintaining my personal style and creative bent. Prior to all this, I didn’t know how it was possible to grab a foothold in the oversaturated Content Creator world, but somehow brands and small businesses found me and now I’m in this full time. It was honestly hard to get inspired because my pride may have been hurt a little at first, but it’s been working and there are bigger and better things coming that I’m excited to be working on. From food styling to product styling, I’m your girl.

IMG_1145

Now with Instagram practically running itself and growing each day, collaborations in motion, small businesses wanting product shots, and clients seeking wardrobe updating… I think I’ve been quite busy! But I couldn’t do it all myself, that’s for sure.

So thank you to these special people for helping Shoes and Sashimi get underway during such a crucial trial period:

@Twelfthknight for being patient and helping me shoot throughout the year. Excited to see what new adventures bring us in 2016

Mom, for being even more patient and mentally invested in everything I do. It’s not fair that you’re often the casualty of my very short fuse sometimes, but I acknowledge it and appreciate you always being there

Tis the Season

Tis the season for holiday looks, so I teamed up with The Glam App (see previous post) and Piedmont photographer Julie Reichle to shoot something extra special. I’m not big on color to be honest, I love my neutrals and as a curveball, I’m actually wearing a bodysuit under an asymmetrical skirt. Hope you enjoy these photos, it’s great to shoot in my hometown!

To all my readers near and far, from London to Tokyo, I wish you a very Merry Christmas and holiday season. Thank you for taking the time to read and keep up with me whether it’s here or on Instagram.  Your patience and kind comments throughout the year has been encouraging and without them I wouldn’t be able to do half the things this blog and Instagram has brought me these past few months. Most of you I’ve never met, but I feel like you’ve been overwhelmingly supportive more than people I know personally.

So cheers to a fast approaching end of the year, new brand partnerships, new content, and new adventures. But most of all, cheers to you guys for being supportive, enthusiastic, and hopping along with me as I embark on some really cool projects. Can’t wait for you to see.

Rocks in your Box

IMG_6741

Hi everyone, I’d like to just thank you all for following Shoes and Sashimi thus far. I’m overwhelmed by the responses I get while posting my personal diaries, it’s exciting and humbling at the same time. As a thank you, I’m giving readers who are interested in all things jewelry a FREE month of gems from Rocksbox, an SF based jewelry subscription box.

How does it work?

1. Simply sign up, take the style survey, and add all the jewelry you see fit into your Wish List.

2. A Rocksbox stylist picks 3 from your Wish List and pops them in the mail.

3. Wear them as much as you like and then return your items for your next set. Your jewelry is always on loan unless you purchase them.

It’s a great service if you are just getting into jewelry and are afraid of the commitment. It’s also great for seasoned jewelry lovers who love to play and switch up your style weekly. Regular monthly membership is $19, not bad right for unlimited jewels? They have all my favorites, from House of Harlow, Vanessa Mooney, and Gorjana to name a few.

So give it a whirl, your first month is on me ;) CODE: LAURENBFF769

All Black Everything

It’s good to be back Bay Area, this is my home after all and I’m happy to say I’ll be here for the majority of March. First order of business though; shooting with the wickedly talented and lightning fast ninja that is Melissa de Mata in Portrero Hill. Be sure to take a look at her work by hitting the link, she’s a fantastic photographer and human.

It was nearly perfect weather the morning that we shot this look. SF can be somewhat chilly even in March, so layering a simple dress under a heavier knit sweater was perfect given the clear skies. Melissa and I met at Front Cafe to get our much needed jolt and then shot up and down the sloping hills of the neighborhood.

For you foodies: If you haven’t been to this area of SF you should definitely check out Plow for their famous brunch menu as well as Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous for their specialty ice cream. I’m clearly missing tons of places on the list, so tell me: What are your favorite eateries in the SF area?

Life’s a Beach

They say life’s a beach. Yea, sometimes it is, but they also say life’s a royal bitch too. I’ve been having a particularly rough week, let alone month. February was shockingly slow. I’m talking like, flat line dead..and that’s with awards season. And maybe it’s also because people only reach out when they need something from you, more than likely it’s for free. I don’t want to sound bitter here, but I do think I’m running on empty. I love what I do when I get to do it but stylists rarely get any love. It’s a relatively lonely journey whether you’re repped or not in a terribly unforgiving industry. Why am I telling you this? Because this blog is the best thing I’ve created for myself. The major lull has allowed me to delve 200% into it. And it’s fun to flip the camera since I’ve been working “behind the scenes” for so many years.

This all came about in Manhattan Beach yesterday, where I came to decompress. It’s my favorite beach community down here and if you’ve ever been then you know why. I came back with a full head of clarity and some salty hair.

I hope everyone is having a great week. And if you’re not, I totally get it. It’ll get better, you just gotta hustle some more..bonus if you look good doing it ;)

Throwback Thursday: Chaser Brand

It’s Thursday, so let’s throw it back, shall we? How many of you are Chaser Brand fans? I am, and this distressed ultra soft National Geographic sweatshirt is one of my favorites. They’re a little rock n roll, a little ironic, a whole lot of cool.

I did this set almost a year ago in Pasadena back when I was just starting to shoot. You can see that my hair was colored in a chocolate brown wash…I’m thinking I’ll do it again in 2 weeks so I can freshen up my newly shorter “lob” :D Stay tuned peeps! And thanks for reading.

Valentines Day at The Mouse House

50 Shades of Grey? Aw hell naw…we went to Disneyland. My friends over at the Aladdin show were so gracious enough to let me and the beau come play at the mouse house for the day, shouts to Sarah (aka Magic Carpet) if you’re reading this ;)

Side note: I can’t do anything before having coffee, so we grabbed breakfast at the Anaheim Packing District, home to many food merchants. Georgia’s was particularly good for their chicken and waffles as well as Cafecito Organico for their coffee. Ok, fueled up and now on to the park!

First ride of the day: My favorite, Star Tours. May the force be with ya’ll. Then we hit targets on Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters. We made pretty fine Planetary Pilots if I do say so myself. We stopped for some eats before going through the Haunted Mansion and then made our way to the next park, California Adventures. I was distraught after hearing California Soaring and World of Color were under construction, but that’s ok, I understand *sigh.* Cars Land is great for all you Lightning McQueen fans, and the Paradise Pier is home to jalepeno cheese stuffed pretzels which are pretty amazing…

Another highlight was seeing the Aladdin musical. Not only do I know the Magic Carpet, but the show itself is fantastic. Finally, the fireworks went off and we ended our evening! Lines were crazy long, as expected and major rides were getting revamped, but it was really nice to just take our time and not rush anywhere :D A great day of relaxing at the happiest place on earth. How did you spend your weekend?

Tip: To avoid heinous lines, go on a weekday if you can or get fast passes. Peak season typically starts in April.

But First, Coffee…

Who goes to a cupcake shop for the coffee? This gal apparently. It’s hard not to be tempted by Velvet’s sweets in the window. I’m a sucker for their red velvet, banana chocolate, and pumpkin. However I did manage to resist and just prance in one day for a cup o’ joe. Also, excellent :) If you haven’t stopped by their Sherman Oaks location, do so when you’re in the area.

Wine Country

People are always shocked when I say that I’ve never really experienced Napa Valley, simply because as an adult I’ve been in Southern California the majority of the time. My parents go often, either for themselves or to entertain guests so I end up living and eating vicariously through them. Bouchon, The French Laundry, Ad Hoc…It seems like everyone and their cousins have been except for me. So to my surprise last Sunday after being bed ridden with what seemed like the plague, the beau decided to pack me in the car and drive on up to Napa for the day. Sweet, right?

IMG_6242

Trip highlights:

Perusing all the vendors at Oxbow Public Market. There’s just so much going on and so many wonderful smells of all kinds of cuisines permeating the place. It’s overwhelming, but in a tasty sensory overload kind of way.

Making a pit stop at Vallarta Market to try their famed burrito. Who goes to Calistoga for a burrito? We did…and it was divine….it’s hidden in this tiny little Mexican grocery store, luckily you can get directions to such establishment here: 1473 Lincoln Street, Calistoga, CA

Going to Bouchon Bakery to pick up gingerbread muffins for Mama and Papa. It’s a bustling little place that I call bread heaven: 6528 Washington Street, Yountville, CA 94599

Ending our trip with a surprise dinner reservation at Ad Hoc by Thomas Keller. Each night is a different prefix menu and I’m still full just thinking about our meal. In all honesty, the Cream of Mushroom Soup was my favorite, served with a gruyere cheese crostini. The main dish was Veal Scallopini served on whipped gold potatoes and broccolini romanesco. And finally for dessert, Vanilla Ice Cream Sundaes with butterscotch, pecans, and strawberry sauce. Needless to say, I am back at the gym and hot yoga to work all of this off!

A New Year

Happy New Year everyone. It seems like yet again another year goes by faster than the last, which is great in some respects, but it’s also left me feeling a bit glum if you will. Maybe because 2014 was a whirlwind of changes where I had to adapt and make bigger decisions rather quickly. With LA’s movie industry going away to budget friendly states like Louisiana, work as a Costume Designer took a big dip. That trickled into the Styling world and I was choosing my jobs very carefully which is fantastic, but sporadic. With work being so dry, I decided to move into a new more affordable apartment in May with a room mate and a little dog named Mister Cosmo. We get along splendidly.

And though 2014 was a year of change, I do think it was one of my favorite years to date. These changes made me incredibly selective with work and career. Once again I have to leave those who do not serve me kindly and learn to let things go. Self awareness and happiness brought by morning yoga is probably my highlight each day. Work is not life, I can manage my time with family who still lives in The Bay, along with my wonderfully supportive boyfriend and his fluffy four legged counterpart Boo (Boo makes appearances on my Instagram from time to time.) And if LA is changing, then so do I. Which is why I started this blog in the first place. Feeling bold, I took a shot in the dark one morning and emailed Ryan Chua, renowned blogging photographer in SF and he graciously agreed to shoot this photo set which came out beautifully. Thank you Ryan, here’s to many more.

Cheers everyone. To a full and happy new year!

Lauren
